What is a Mantra? I'm talking about Kundalini mantras here. A mantra is like magic words that connect us to a deeper place, deep within us...they are the conversations of the mind with the soul...this is the essence of Mantra. Mantra is the scientific use of sound to affect consciousness; also called “Mantra Yoga”. Next to breathing, the use of mantra is one of the most important aspects of the practice of Kundalini yoga. MAN means mind. TRA means to tune the vibration. Mantra is a sound current which tunes and controls mental vibration. Yogi Bhajan tells us that Mantra Yoga is perhaps one of the most ancient ways of self realization. The ancient sages describe Mantra as a seed, which when ripe flowers the Divine within you. Mantras are actual formulas that work according to physical and metaphysical laws. When repeating the mantra (aloud) it restructures the patterns in the mind that allow the experience. When we have silence, it allows us to be aware of the many experiences of the mind. Chanting mantra either silently or aloud is a conscious method for controlling and directing your mind. Attitudes and beliefs like happiness, sorrow, joy, and regret are vibratory frequencies of the mind – thought waves. These thought waves determine what kind of program your mind plays. Those beliefs and attitudes that we choose to hold on to become our vibration. When we chant mantra, we are choosing to invoke the positive power contained in the syllables of that particular mantra. Chanting sets in motion the vibrations to bring about the effect. It doesn’t matter if we understand the meaning of the sounds or not. Correct pronunciation of these ancient Kundalini Yoga Words, vibrate different parts of the roof of the mouth, touching on meridian points, balancing and stimulating different parts of the body and brain, and listening to the sound inside you, plus how many minutes or hours a person chants, all combines to bring you safety to inner states of awareness (enlightenment) and change. Read these ancient sacred words, the translations and what they can bring into your life. Decide how many days you are willing to commit to this practice (times and days explained below). There are 84 meridian points on the roof of the mouth which the tongue stimulates those meridian points, and they in turn stimulate the hypothalamus which makes the pineal gland radiate. When the pineal gland radiates, it creates an impulse in the pituitary gland. When the pituitary gland gives impulses, the entire glandular system secretes and a human being obtains bliss. This is the science. Kundalini Yoga Mantras are chanted in a special language, Gurmukhi, that connects us with the inner sound current. The words 'guru-mukh literally mean "from the mouth of the guru". While "Gurmukhi" is spoken, it is a poetic rendering, written in a script intended for spiritual writings. Chanting a mantra is also considered a meditation and can include a mudra (hand position), breathing in a certain way, and the sound of the words. These mantras contain the vibrations of peace, prosperity, connection, and many other qualities and are understood by their impact, even if the meaning of each word is not known. Pronunciation comes with repetition and by example. Understanding the meaning of the words adds another layer of effectiveness to chanting. "Mantras are not small things, mantras have power. They are the mind vibration in relationship to the Cosmos. The science of mantra is based on the knowledge that sound is a form of energy having structure, power, and a definite predictable effect on the chakras and the human psyche." ~ Yogi Bhajan Chanting Mantra:
Chanting Mantras Daily:
You can listen to some Kundalini yoga mantra on You Tube, Spotify, Pandora and if you like them, you can purchase and download them from iTunes and Spirit Voyage. Some of my favorite Kundalini Mantra artists are: Snatam Kaur, Nirinjan Kaur, Simrit Kaur, Ajeet Kaur, Simrit Kaur, Jai Jagdeesh, White Sun, Mirabai Ceiba, Paloma Devi, Aykanna, Gurunam Singh, Sada Sat Kaur, Krishan. You can look up the words to the mantras and their meanings on the Spirit Voyage Mantrapedia page. I would like to find some time to start posting Mantra Mondays where I feature a mantra, it's meaning, what it can be used for along with some videos of the mantra. Stay tuned! Here is a great article about Sound and Mantra on Spirit Voyage. Simrit talking about chanting mantra: What is Foot Zone Therapy?
A foot zone is when someone works all 120 reflex points in the foot in a specific order and using specific motions. When a signal point is triggered within a certain zone, a message goes to the tissue or organ effected, through a reflex arc to the spinal cord and then to the brain. Discomfort is experienced in the areas of imbalance–areas where healing is needed. Zone Therapy stimulates every organ and renews the cell system in each treatment. Zone Therapy is a holistic approach which recognizes that all of the body’s cells and organs make up a complex and interactive organism. This was a great breakthrough because it is the brain to which information from the foot is sent via Foot Zone Therapy. In turn the brain makes the corrections to your whole health system. Remember, the entire body is run by instruction from the brain. Zone Therapy has been found to be a “signal”, or electro-magnetic system, rather than a reflex system and treats the body holistically rather than symptomatically. Plus, the body is always treated in its entirety. Thus no partial zone treatments are advised. What are the Benefits of the Foot Zone? The entire body is mapped out on the bottom of the feet. The zone includes reflex points for organs, muscles, joints and other body systems. When all of these points are worked during a foot zone along with the use of essential oils, signals are sent to the nervous system to create balance. Similar to other techniques, such as the Aromatouch technique, we are telling the body to engage either the parasympathetic or sympathetic nervous system, which are very intelligent and knowing which areas of the body are out of balance, and can initiate sequences to re-establish internal balance. The foot zone along with the use of essential oils can be used as preventative method as possible imbalances can be recognized and addressed before manifesting themselves physically in the body. Zone Therapy encourages the body’s natural healing capability by stimulating: • blood circulation • hormone balance • lymph flow • digestion • assimilation • elimination • function of the autonomic nervous system Most important benefits include: • renewing cell systems • rejuvenating life/energy • bringing the body into balance • assess the body’s current state of health Anyone will benefit from Zone Therapy. People of all ages and all conditions of health can enjoy improved health and vitality. You will experience a fuller, more active life and can help others do the same. Did you know that one of the best places to use essential oils is on the feet? Why? 1. The feet have very large pores so the oils can absorb more quickly. Normally it takes about 20 minutes for an essential oils to fully absorb intothe body, but the time is much quiker when the oils are applied to the feet. 2. The skin on the bottom of the feet is not very sensitive. The other places in the body where the oils absorb quickly, such as the back of the neck, are sensitive areas. Some stronger oils, such as oregano or thyme may irratate the skin in sesitive areas, but are okay to use on the feet. 3. The entire body is mapped out on the bottom of the feet! Our entire body is mapped out on the bottom of the feet in the form of over 120 reflex points that correspond with different body parts and systems. When oils are applied in the correct area of the foot, not only are they absorbed quickly, but a signal is sent to the particular area of the body to begin functioning correctly. Tips - The Lung Area is found in the ball of the foot. If you are congested or are having trouble breathing, put Breathe oil on the balls of your feet and then massage that area with a golf ball. - The Reproductive Area is Found in the heel of the foot. If you are experiencing menstral cramps, put Clary Calm on the heels of your feet and then massage with a golf ball. - The Head Point is found in the big toe. If you are having headaches, put Past Tense on your big toes and then massage those areas by rolling your knuckles back and forth over the big toes. FAQ Does this Replace a Doctor? Absolutely not! This is a modality that compliments other healthcare practices. Our method helps you recognize a health issue before it manifess as well as accelerates healing when you do get sick. Are There Studies to Back up Your Methods? Yes. Multiple universities have studied the effects of reflexology, oil use, and energy work and have found them all to very beneficial. Are Reflexology and Foot Zoning Different? The answer is yes and no. Here’s why. Reflexology by definition according to Wikipedia is, "an alternative medicine" The answer is yes and no. Here’s why. Reflexology by definition according to Wikipedia is, "an alternative medicine involving application of pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on a system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work effects a physical change to the body.” Our program teaches over 120 reflex points on the feet using pressure with specific techniques, however we incorporate the use of essential oils along with the points, as we feel this is a very effective method. Also, when an individual point or a couple of points are worked, we refer to this as reflexology as we are addressing a certain reflex point. When all 120 points are worked together in a specific flow, one right after another, we call this a foot zone, because all 10 of the body’s zones are being worked together. This is important because all of our body’s systems work together. When one system is not functioning well, other systems will suffer. We suggest getting a foot zone regularly (2-4 per month spaced regularly) as this will stimulate all the systems of the body, such as the lymphatic and digestive systems. We do recommend working reflex points as often as needed. For example, if a child has an earache, the reflex point corresponding with the ear can be worked several times per day until the symptoms subside. What is the history of Foot Zoning? Zone Therapy was brought to the U.S. in 1989 by Dr. Charles Ersdal, M.D. of Kristiansand, Norway. Dr. Ersdal is the originator and developer of this particular technique of zone therapy. He had over 25 years of personal research, using no medicines, remedies, or other therapies to understand the effect Zone Therapy had on the body. He found that those who received consistent treatment experienced over a 95 % success rate. Dr. Ersdal focused on the entirety, meaning working all the body systems on the feet together. He knew that if one body system was out of balance another would be negatively affected. Thus, he developed a treatment that is administered in a precise manner with directional patterns along zones that run the entire length of the body. He knew that if one body system was out of balance another would be negatively affected. Thus, he developed a treatment that is administered in a precise manner with directional patterns along zones that run the entire length of the body. All body systems are represented in each zone and because the body contains its own innate healing intelligence the imbalances are found through discomfort. This discomfort signals the brain to make a correction in the autonomic nervous system and sends the necessary correction back to the tissue or organ for healing. When the body has made significant change, the discomfort is no longer experienced and the person begins to see huge improvements with their health! Much acclaim and appreciation is given to Dr. Ersdal and his research. His work was thorough and succinct, yet he used invasive pressure to force the signals to change. Since his passing, students under his instruction have found that using medium pressure to “gently persuade” the signals to engage continues to help the body heal naturally and effectively. With Family Foot Reflexology, giving a full zone of 30-40 minutes is still a must when feasible; however, working on specific points of the feet (reflexology) in a family setting facilitates convenience and simplicity. *courtesy of http://www.familyfootreflexology.com (where I received my training) ![]() Sit straight in Easy Pose. It's important that you tune in first! (more about tuning in later in the post) Eyes: Meditate at the Brow Point. Mantra: Produce the five primal sounds (panj shabd): S, T, N, M, A, in the original word form: SA: Infinity, cosmos, beginning TA: Life, existence NA: Death, change, transformation MA: Rebirth Each repetition of the entire mantra takes 3 to 4 seconds. This is the cycle of Creation. From the Infinite comes life and individual existence. From life comes death or change. From death comes the rebirth of consciousnes to the joy of the Infinite through which compassion leads back to life. Mudra: Begin in Gyan Mudra. (Mudra is a hand position) The elbows are straight while chanting, and the mudra changes as each fingertip touches in turn the tip of the thumb with firm pressure. On "Sa" touch the index finger (Jupiter finger) with the thumb tip with pressure. On "Ta" touch the middle finger (Saturn finger) with the thumb tip with pressure. On "Na" touch the ring finger (Sun finger) with the thumb tip with pressure. On "Ma" touch the little finger (Mercury finger) with the thumb tip with pressure.
Each time you close a mudra by joining the thumb with a finger, your ego "seals" its effect in your consciousness. This meditation brings a total mental balance to the individual psyche. Vibrating on each fingertip alternates the electrical polarities. The index and ring fingers are electrically negative, relative to the other fingers. This causes a balance in the electromagnetic projection of the aura. In other words, it stimulates the nerve endings in the fingertips, balancing the right and left hemispheres of the brain. This positively changes your habits and works through insecurities. Chant in three languages of consciousness: Human: normal or out loud voice (the world) Lovers: strong whisper (longing to belong) Divine: mentally; silent (Infinity) Time (for 31 minute meditation): Begin the kriya in a normal voice for 5 minutes; then whisper for 5 minutes; then go deep into the sound, vibrating silently for 10 minutes. Then come back to a whisper for 5 minutes, then aloud for 5 minutes. The duration of the meditation may vary, as long as the proportion of loud, whisper, silent, whisper, loud is maintained. Follow with one 1 minute of stretching the arms over your head and spreading the fingers wide, shaking them out, circulating the energy, inhaling and exhaling 3 times. Relax. 31 minutes is a long time for beginners. I reccomend starting with 11 minutes and you can work your way up by slowly increasing the times. Here is a good way to get started.
Wondering how you keep track of the time? There's an app for that! If you don't want to pay $1.99, there is a website you can use to follow along. I also included 2 videos at the bottom of this post that you can watch free and follow along. One is for 31 minutes and the other for the shorter 12 minute version. Practicing this meditation is both a science and an art. It is an art in the way it molds consciousness and in the refinement of sensation and insight it produces. It is a science in the tested certainty of the results each technique produces. Meditations have coded actions to their reactions in the psyche. But because Kirtan Kriya is effective and exact, it can also lead to problems if not done properly. Yogi Bhajan said at Winter Solstice 1972 that a person who wears pure white and meditates on this sound current for 2-1/2 hours a day for one year, will know the unknowable, and see the unseeable. Through this constant practice, the mind awakens to the infinite capacity of the soul for sacrifice, service, and creation. The Teachings of Yogi Bhajan ©2008
Some Helpful Tips If during the silent part of the meditation, the mind wanders uncontrollably, go back to a whisper, to a loud voice, to a whisper, and back into silence. Do this as often as you need to. Some people may experience headaches from practicing Kirtan Kriya. The most common reason for this is improper circulation of prana in the solar centers. To avoid or correct this problem, meditate on the primal sounds in the “L” form. This means feel there is a constant inflow of cosmic energy into the solar center, or Tenth Gate. Imagine the energy of each sound moving through the Crown Chakra, and out through the Third Eye Point as it is projected to Infinity. This energy flow follows the energy pathway called the Golden Cord—the connection between the pineal and pituitary glands. You may also want to try covering the head with a natural fiber cloth. If you want to follow along with some music: Here is a 31 min song (left) and a 12 min one (right).
Here is a great video of Guruka Singh explaining Kirtan Kriya. I highly recommend practicing Kirtan Kriya for 40 days in a row. If you skip a day, go back and start over. Guru Singh has a great explanation about doing a 40 day practice. This meditation has many benefits, it has been shown to reduce stress levels and increase activity in areas of the brain that are central to memory. The Alzheimer's Research and Prevention Foundation has had great success with it and even features it on their page here.
Here are four articles featured on The Huffington Post about Kirtan Kriya. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tag/kirtan-kriya/ I challenge you to try Kirtan Kriya for 40 days and see how it can change your life! I did it for 40+ days back in 2012 and the effects were amazing. ![]() Addiction is rampant these days, most people have subconscious addictions like being a victim or always being right or they have addictions to sugar, their cell phone, Facebook, games etc if not more serious addictions such as drugs or pornography. This is a powerful Kundalini yoga medical meditation for habituation AKA "The Addiction Meditation". It's used in some treatment centers as it is powerful enough to get people off meth and crack! We did this meditation as a class every day we had teacher training and I did it at home every day for 6 months (I've been slacking and need to start doing it again). I just wanted to share it with you. My teacher said when doing this meditation, whatever doesn't serve you will fall away. People in class all noticed shifts. A women in my training who came from generations of hoarders started selling her things on ebay (and has made $11,000 off it in the last 6 months!!!). Another woman quit smoking after 32 years. It's so powerful it's often used in rehab centers to get people off drugs, alcohol, pornography, etc! Yogi Bhajan says: "This meditation is one of a class of meditations that will become well-known to the future medical society. Meditation will be used to alleviate all kinds of mental and physical afflictions, but it may be as many as 500 years before the new medical science will understand the effects of this kind of meditation well enough to delineate all its parameters in measurable factors. The pressure exerted by the thumbs triggers a rhythmic reflex current into the central brain. This current activates the brain area directly underneath the stem of the pineal gland. It is an imbalance in this area that makes mental and physical addictions seemingly unbreakable. In modern culture, the imbalance is pandemic. If we are not addicted to smoking, eating, drinking or drugs, then we are addicted subconsciously to acceptance, advancement, rejection, emotional love, etc. All these lead us to insecure and neurotic behavior patterns. The imbalance in this pineal area upsets the radiance of the pineal gland itself. It is this pulsating radiance that regulates the pituitary gland. Since the pituitary regulates the rest of the glandular system, the entire body and mind go out of balance. This meditation corrects the problem. It is excellent for everyone but particularly effective for rehabilitation efforts in drug dependence, mental illness, and phobic conditions." How to Do It Sit in a comfortable pose. Straighten the spine and make sure the first six lower vertebrae are locked forward. Make fists of both hands and extend the thumbs straight. Place the thumbs on the temples and find the niche where the thumbs just fit. This is the lower anterior portion of the frontal bone above the temporal-sphenoidal suture. Lock the back molars together and keep the lips closed. Vibrate the jaw muscles by alternating the pressure on the molars. A muscle will move in rhythm under the thumbs. Feel it massage the thumbs and app!y a firm pressure with the hands. Keep the eyes closed and look toward the center of the eyes at the brow point. Silently vibrate the five primal sounds, “Sa Ta Na Ma,” at the brow. Continue 5 to 7 minutes. With practice the time can be increased to 20 minutes and ultimately to 31 minutes.
